TWO DECADES OF IMPACT

For 20 years, Mentoring in Medicine & Science (MIMS) has transformed lives and strengthened communities by opening doors to careers in healthcare. Since its founding in 2006 by Dr. Jocelyn Freeman, MIMS has empowered more than 4,000 participants and engaged over 150 healthcare professionals as mentors, instructors, and advocates. What began as a vision to ensure that people from all backgrounds could see themselves in the health professions has grown into a nationally recognized model for mentorship, workforce development, and community training.

At the center of this work is the Summer Internship Program, an immersive experience that has operated every year since the organization’s inception. Through hands-on clinical skills training, mentorship, professional development, and direct exposure to healthcare careers, MIMS has inspired thousands of students and young adults to pursue meaningful careers as physicians, nurses, public health leaders, community health workers, and other healthcare professionals. The organization’s impact extends far beyond one summer, creating a lifelong network of alumni who continue to serve and lead in their communities.

On Friday, July 24, 2026, MIMS will celebrate this extraordinary milestone with Two Decades of Impact, a special 20th Anniversary Celebration honoring alumni, volunteers, partners, and supporters who have helped shape the organization’s legacy. The event will honor alumni, community partners, volunteers, and supporters who have advanced the MIMS mission. As MIMS looks to the future, the organization remains committed to expanding access to health careers, delivering lifesaving training to people of all ages, and building a healthcare workforce that reflects and understands the communities it serves.
