Vision
Mentoring in Medicine & Science, Inc. (MIMS) is a nonprofit organization operating in Oakland, California. Our goal is to address health care disparities in urban communities by increasing the diversity of the health care workforce. Our mission is to increase the number of underrepresented health professionals through mentoring, career exposure, and leadership development.
History
In 2004, three physicians and an educator formed Mentoring in Medicine, Inc. (MIM) in New York, NY. Mentoring in Medicine & Science, Inc. (MIMS) was created using the shared mission of MIM to develop programs and outreach in Oakland, CA. Since its inception in March 2006, MIMS programs have impacted nearly 2000 students. MIMS has recruited nearly 150 health professional volunteers in the Bay Area which currently include physicians from various specialties, dentists, physician’s assistants, public health advocates, researchers, nurses, pharmacists, physical/occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, respiratory therapists, psychologists, and audiologists.
